My new digs

July 17, 2006

Well, here I am! All moved in. Well, kind of. I’ve left all my “furniture” behind and am starting from scratch. Thanks to Selena for suggesting I move to WordPress. You were right, honey. These new digs suit me.

I first began blogging over a year ago as an extra credit project for my English class. I have since found that blogging is a good way to practice my writing as well as to share my thoughts on current issues. After using a couple of different blogging sites, I’m glad to now be at WordPress.

Here’s my newest address:

Have you thought about getting your own domain name? LIke chrisleon.com or leonsroar.com ? Would be a lot easier to remember your site. Just something to think about . — CF

Chris, happy to see you online. Perhaps you can open the question: are we deaf or are we people of color?

In other words, what is more important to us, that we are culturally Deaf or that we are white, black, Hispanic, half this or half that, or???

A few black friends have told me that it was more important to them to be with other Deaf people and to have a Deaf identity than a Black identity.

I thought at the time this was sad. Not to be able to call one’s own heritage an asset to be proud of…simply because those who handed it down were Hearing.

What is the response to that today? Is it the same as when I first heard it 20 years ago?

As for myself, I am Deaf, white, formerly married to a Colombian, and my grown children include both deaf and hearing individuals. They are classified as Hispanic by various school programs and on applications for services. The definition of Hispanic according to the forms is “at least one parent was born in (listing of countries where Spanish is spoken) or the native language in the home is Spanish”. Interesting…but we all look white.

One day, hopefully soon in the future, we all will simply be people with a variety of characteristics, color being only one of many, and will no longer classify ourselves by characteristics. Is that a good or bad thing?

Just throwing out hooks for bites. Make them good.

    Hi Sena,

Thanks for sharing your comments. You ask some really good questions! I will address my thoughts on these issues in future blog postings and look forward to hearing your thoughts on these issues as well. Let’s get a dialogue going!

Hi Chris – I’ve enjoyed reading your blog lately and would really like to have you come to Gallaudet to participate in a conference I’m organizing called “Blogging the Future of Gallaudet.” Let me know if you are interested in participating and I will send you more information. Jill
